With Hikaru around, Kaoru usually adopts the cheeky, could-care-less prankster side, they're loved and equally disliked for, at times. Matching his stride to Hikaru's is the name of the game here and as such, feelings of others might be trodded on without him realizing it - sometimes he does know what he's subtlely doing, but Hikaru is more important, after all. Even so, he thoroughly enjoys the tricks he and Hikaru get up to and loves executing their plans. By himself, Kaoru thinks out his actions more carefully, and keeps any irrational feelings under check. He's sensitive to the feelings of others then, and would not be as brutally honest, preferring to keep a pleasant outlook instead.

Although Kaoru prefers to think that what he does is for the best for Hikaru, sometimes unconsciously ... the outcome of what he does would be beneficial to him too. Kaoru unconsciously observes his surroundings and the people around him, unknowingly building his ideas and plans around what he sees and using that to determine how to act around them. He is more protective of his twin than he allows others to know.

To him, the host club is a way of 'widening their world', as Tamaki might put it. Although he's comfortable together with just Hikaru, he's curious about the people outside too. Intrusion and unstability is never pleasant but Kaoru feels experiences like those are necessary to go through. In a way, he is trying to absorb what he can from the outside world and yet is silently, secretly fighting hard to still keep their twin world intact.
